When Do You Need a Dental Crown? 7 Signs It's Time

A dental crown is one of the most common restorative treatments in dentistry, but most patients aren't sure when they actually need one versus a simpler fix like a filling or bonding. Understanding the signs that a crown is necessary helps you make informed decisions and address problems before they get worse.

At Fountains Dental Care in Chandler, our dentists Dr. Eric Kerbs, Dr. Nick Mellum, and Dr. Julie Do evaluate each situation individually to recommend the treatment that best protects your tooth for the long term. Here are seven signs that a dental crown may be the right solution.

1. You Have a Large Cavity That a Filling Can't Support

Fillings work well for small to moderate cavities, but they have limits. When decay removes a significant portion of tooth structure, a filling alone doesn't provide enough support. The remaining tooth walls become thin and vulnerable to cracking under normal chewing forces.

Your dentist may recommend a crown when the cavity extends across more than half the width of the tooth, when the filling would need to be so large that the surrounding tooth can't support it, or when a tooth has had multiple fillings over the years and there's not enough healthy structure left to hold another one. A crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth, distributing chewing forces evenly and protecting what remains.

2. You've Had Root Canal Therapy

After a root canal, the treated tooth loses its blood supply and becomes more brittle over time. Without the living tissue inside, the tooth is significantly more prone to fracture, especially during chewing. Most dentists recommend placing a crown on a root-canal-treated tooth to protect it from cracking.

The crown acts as a helmet for the weakened tooth, holding it together and absorbing forces that would otherwise cause it to split. Skipping the crown after a root canal is one of the most common reasons patients end up losing a tooth that could have been saved.

3. Your Tooth Is Cracked or Fractured

Cracks in teeth can range from superficial craze lines (which are usually harmless) to deep fractures that extend toward the root. If you're experiencing sharp pain when biting down, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, or pain that comes and goes unpredictably, you may have a cracked tooth that needs a crown.

A crown holds the cracked pieces together and prevents the fracture from spreading deeper into the tooth. Left untreated, a cracked tooth can split completely, requiring extraction and a more complex replacement like a dental implant or bridge. If you suspect a crack, contact our Chandler emergency dental team for evaluation.

4. Your Old Filling Is Failing

Dental fillings don't last forever. Amalgam fillings typically last 10 to 15 years, and composite fillings last 5 to 10 years. As fillings age, they can crack, leak, or pull away from the tooth, creating gaps where bacteria can enter and cause new decay underneath.

When a filling fails, simply placing a new filling isn't always the best option, especially if the tooth has already lost significant structure from the original cavity and the filling itself. At some point, the tooth needs more coverage than a filling can provide. A crown replaces the failing filling and protects the entire tooth from further damage.

5. Your Tooth Is Severely Worn Down

Teeth wear down over time from grinding (bruxism), acid erosion, or simply decades of use. Severely worn teeth lose their height, change the way your bite comes together, and become more vulnerable to fracture. You might notice that your teeth look shorter, feel rough or flat on the chewing surface, or cause jaw pain from a misaligned bite.

Crowns restore worn teeth to their proper height and shape, reestablishing a healthy bite and protecting the remaining tooth structure. If grinding is the cause, your dentist may also recommend a nightguard to protect the crowns and your natural teeth from further wear. Arizona's dry climate can contribute to enamel erosion over time, making regular dental checkups at our Chandler office especially important for catching wear patterns early.

6. You Need to Support a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Those anchor teeth, called abutments, receive crowns to provide the structural support the bridge needs to function properly.

If you're missing a tooth and considering a bridge as an alternative to a dental implant, the abutment teeth must be strong enough to support the bridge. Your dentist evaluates whether those teeth are healthy candidates for crowns before recommending a bridge.

7. Your Tooth Has a Cosmetic Issue That Bonding Can't Fix

While cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers address many aesthetic concerns, some cosmetic issues require full coverage that only a crown provides. Severely misshapen teeth, teeth with extensive discoloration that doesn't respond to whitening, or teeth that are both structurally compromised and cosmetically damaged may benefit from a crown that restores both appearance and function at the same time.

A well-made crown is virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth. Modern porcelain and zirconia materials match the translucency, color, and light-reflecting properties of natural enamel, so your crown blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.

What to Expect When Getting a Crown

The crown process at Fountains Dental Care typically involves two appointments. At the first visit, we reshape the tooth, take precise digital impressions, and place a temporary crown. Your custom crown is fabricated at a dental laboratory over one to two weeks. At the second visit, we remove the temporary, verify the fit and color of your permanent crown, and cement it in place.

With proper care, a dental crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years or longer. Care for it like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss around the crown margins, and visit our Chandler office for regular checkups so we can monitor its condition.

Don't Wait Until It Breaks

The most important thing to understand about dental crowns is that they're preventive as much as they're restorative. A crown placed on a weakened tooth today prevents a fracture, extraction, and implant tomorrow. The earlier you address the signs above, the more options you have and the less complex the treatment.

At Fountains Dental Care, Dr. Eric Kerbs, Dr. Nick Mellum, and Dr. Julie Do bring over 25 years of combined experience in crown design and placement. We use advanced digital imaging to evaluate your teeth thoroughly and recommend crowns only when they're genuinely the best option for your situation.

If you're experiencing any of the signs above, or if it's been a while since your last checkup, schedule an appointment at our Chandler office or call (480) 222-8083. We serve families from across the East Valley, including Ocotillo, Fulton Ranch, Sun Lakes, Balboa Way, Gilbert, and Mesa.
