Difference between teeth cleaning, whitening, and polishing

Good oral hygiene is crucial not only for a confident smile but also for our overall health and well-being. Dental procedures are essential to maintaining the health of our teeth and gums.

Teeth Cleaning:

Teeth cleaning, also known as dental prophylaxis, is a preventive procedure performed by dental professionals to remove plaque and tartar buildup.

This process involves the use of specialized tools like scalers and ultrasonic devices to carefully eliminate plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces, including hard-to-reach areas.

By doing so, teeth cleaning helps prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. It also promotes healthier gums and preserves overall oral health. Regular teeth cleaning, recommended every six months, is an integral part of maintaining good oral hygiene.

Teeth Whitening:

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure aimed at brightening the color of the teeth. It is especially beneficial for individuals with stained or discolored teeth. Common causes of tooth discoloration include aging, certain foods and beverages, tobacco use, and poor oral hygiene.

Teeth whitening can be achieved through various methods.

  • In-office professional whitening is performed by a dental professional using stronger bleaching agents, which can provide faster and more noticeable results.
  • At-home whitening kits, on the other hand, involve the use of whitening gels or strips that are applied to the teeth for a specified duration.

Teeth whitening treatments may have some safety considerations and potential side effects, such as tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. The achievable results and duration of teeth whitening vary depending on the method used and the individual's teeth.

Teeth Polishing:

Teeth polishing is a cosmetic dental procedure focused on enhancing the appearance of teeth. Unlike teeth cleaning or whitening, teeth polishing primarily targets the removal of surface stains and plaque

This procedure involves the use of a rotating dental instrument with a polishing cup or brush and a special polishing paste. The paste gently buffs the teeth, removing stubborn stains and leaving them with a smoother, brighter surface.

Teeth polishing is not a substitute for teeth cleaning or whitening but rather a complementary procedure that enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the teeth.
